FERNWEH Tracking Leash - BioThane® or POP strap - adjustable length - 5, 7, 10 or 15 m
The FERNWEH tracking leash was specifically designed for ease of handling.
The detachable handle allows the leash to drag on the ground and then be picked up again without picking up dirt.
The woven material makes the handle light and compact, so it can be easily stored in your bag. Even when wet, the handle remains non-slip and secure in your hand.
When to use the FERNWEH tracking leash
Tracking leashes – also known as scent leashes – are used when dogs should have more freedom of movement without sacrificing safety and control.
- For tracking and scent work with a harness, e.g., for sniffing and search tasks
- For securing young dogs when they want to explore their surroundings but cannot yet be reliably recalled
- For anxious or socially insecure dogs to allow them freedom to sniff and look around
- Where leashing is mandatory, to still give the dog freedom of movement
- For recall training and for training stimulus-response chains, e.g., through retrieve work
The tracking leash is not for permanent correction, but rather as a safety connection that gives the dog orientation and allows the human freedom of action.
Handle & Guidance
The detachable handle is available in 16 mm or 19 mm width, depending on the version, and is made of woven POP strap.
The material is soft in the hand, yet non-slip, and retains these properties even in wet weather conditions.
In the blue version, the handle is 25 mm wide.
Use with the CHILL waist belt:
Place the handle in the D-ring of the waist belt and guide the carabiner through the handle. Then attach the FERNWEH leash to the carabiner of the handle.
This allows the leash to rotate, enabling hands-free, relaxed guidance.
The same principle can also be applied to our UM'S ECK dog leash. The RATZFATZ dog leash (2.5 m) can be hooked directly into the D-ring of the waist belt for walks.
Material & Workmanship
The FERNWEH tracking leash is designed and manufactured in Germany. It is available in either original BioThane® or our POP strap, which is specially made for our products.
Our BioThane® (USA) is extra thin, very flexible, weatherproof, and ideal for rain, mud, and everyday use. Dirt and moisture can be easily wiped off with water. The material can withstand up to 1000 kg of centrifugal force.
The POP strap has a woven appearance but is firmer and thicker than conventional nylon leashes. It retains its shape even under stress and lies calmly in the hand.
The workmanship includes chrome-plated leash carabiners (to prevent discoloration and allergic reactions), a stainless steel D-ring, and stainless steel screws that are additionally glued.
The stainless steel screws provide a particularly high-quality, calm look.
Width Recommendation
- 16 mm – for dogs up to approx. 12 kg
- 19 mm – for dogs up to approx. 30 kg

- Suitable for everyday use and training
- Please check for wear and tear every 6 months
- Regular checks recommended for dogs that pull strongly
- If there are bite marks, do not continue to use and replace the leash
